John Havrilla is a saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer based in the
Chicago area. A dynamic and flexible woodwind doubler, John performs across jazz,
commercial, and theatrical settings, bringing versatility and musicality to each project.
An avid saxophonist and improviser, John has performed at Chicago’s most notable jazz
venues such as the Jazz Showcase, Andy’s Jazz Club, and The Green Mill. He has
performed alongside featured guest artists including Carmen Bradford, Kellen Hanas,
and Steve Wilson. His performance credits also include work with artists like Barry Jean
Fontenot, Walker Landgraf, and Ellie Banke. John recently received a master’s degree in
Jazz Studies from DePaul University where he studied with Scott Burns and Tom Matta.
He also holds a bachelor’s degree in Digital Media with a focus in Audio/Video
Production from Elmhurst University.
John’s teaching philosophy is the idea that a genuine love for music is the most
powerful catalyst for learning. He aims to inspire and nurture a deep appreciation for
music, fostering curiosity and passion in his students. Beyond teaching notes and
rhythms, he seeks to impart the joy of creation and self expression.
